- Grades: 12 only
- Ages: any senior
- Citizenship: US citizens or permanent residents enrolled in a US high school
International students attending US high schools may be eligible — check current rules
The pathway
Direct application — no regional qualifier needed. Student submits application + research paper in November. 300 semifinalists announced in January. 40 finalists invited to Washington DC in March.

What you submit
- Full research paper (up to 20 pages, not counting references/appendices)
- Short answer essays (scientific background, motivation, future goals)
- Personal statement
- Two letters of recommendation (mentor + teacher)
- Official transcript
- Standardized test scores (optional but most finalists submit SAT/ACT)
Format & judging
- Abstract limit: 300 words
- Paper: required — Up to 20 pages, standard scientific paper format (IMRaD), double-spaced, 12pt font, 1-inch margins. Must include abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, references.
- Oral defense / interview — Finalists present to a panel of professional scientists. Public exhibition also held.
- Max team size: 1
Awards
- First Place: $250,000
- Second Place: $175,000
- Third Place: $150,000
- Fourth Through Tenth: $80,000 each
- All 40 Finalists: $25,000 minimum
- All 300 Semifinalists: $2,000 + college recognition
